Biographical outline, sources and publications, origins of compositional style, Italian and Spanish influences, approach to form, treatment of tonality, harmonic and melodic signatures, 17th & 18th-century keyboard temperaments, fingering, articulation, touch, tempo, harpsichords and fortepianos
For the class we will use three instruments―all made by Madison builder Norman Sheppard (sheppardkeyboards.com)―modeled after 17th and 18th-century originals:
c. 1680 Single-manual Italian harpsichord after Ridolfi
c. 1720 Double-manual harpsichord after Mietke
c. 1780 South-German fortepiano after Stein
